What is an Election?

This was due Monday, November 3, 2008. Sorry Mom

Election Day in the United States is the day set by law for the selection of public officials by popular ballot. Federal (or National) Elections always occur on the Tuesday following the first Monday of November of every even numbered year (the Tuesday between November 2 and November 8, inclusively).
In Federal Elections, all members of the House of Representatives are elected for two-year terms together with one-third of the Senate for six-year terms. In years with a Presidential Election (years that are evenly divisible by four), electors for President and Vice-president are also chosen according to the method determined by each state. Many state and local government offices are also elected on Election Day, but this varies according to state and local law.
Congress has mandated a uniform date for Presidential and Congressional elections, though early voting is nonetheless authorized in many states. In Oregon, where all elections are vote-by-mail, all ballots must be received by a set time on Election Day, as is common with absentee ballots in most states (except overseas military ballots which receive more time by Federal law). In the state of Washington, where most counties are vote-by-mail (and in the others most votes are cast by mail as permanent absentee ballots), ballots need only be postmarked by Election Day.
Election Day is a legal holiday in some states, including Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. Some other states have laws that allow workers to take time off from employment without reprisal, and often without loss in pay. Democratic Representative John Conyers of Michigan recently introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that would make Election Day a national holiday, Democracy Day.

History

By federal law since 1792, Congress permitted the states to conduct their presidential elections (or otherwise to choose their Electors) anytime in a 34 day period before the first Wednesday of December, which was the day set for the meeting of the Electors of the U.S. president and vice-president (the Electoral College), in their respective states. The problems borne of such an arrangement were obvious and were intensified by improved communications via train and telegraph: the states that voted later could swell, diminish, or be influenced by a candidate's victories in the states that voted earlier. In close elections, the states that voted last might well determine the outcome. A uniform date for choosing presidential Electors was instituted by the U.S. Congress in 1845. Many theories have been advanced as to why the Congress settled on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The actual reasons, as shown in records of Congressional debate on the bill in December 1844, were fairly prosaic. The bill initially set the national day for choosing presidential Electors on "the first Tuesday in November," in years divisible by four (1848, 1852, etc.). But it was pointed out that in some years the period between the first Tuesday in November and the first Wednesday in December (when the Electoral College met) would be more than 34 days, in violation of the existing Electoral College law. So, the bill was amended to move the national date for choosing presidential Electors forward to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, a date scheme already used in the state of New York.
As for the day of the week chosen, Sunday was ruled out because it was the Sabbath. An election on Monday might require travel on Sunday, and so was also ruled out. Tuesday had no problem.
One theory as to the choice of date is that November 5th is the day in 1605 on which terrorists tried to blow up the English Parliament in the Gunpowder Plot. The plot was stopped and therefore democracy survived. Choosing November for elections therefore celebrates the ending of a plot to kill democracy.

Okay, that's something I got online. My thoughts on the Election is that you get to pick a new person for president and hope that they do a good job. Because if they don't the economy will suffer.

What can I contribute as an older sibling?

I could help out with the little kids, by helping the smaller ones get dress
I could help out with the cleaning, giving mom a helping hand
I could help mom in school, do my work in a timely manner
I could help wash the dishes, on my day of dish duty
I could help by doing my chore,
I could be nice to Andrianna,
I could stop hitting Emily,
I could stop calling Jonathan names,
I could stop messing with Marcia and her non-boobs,
and I could help mom out a little more.

As a Christian Pre-teen How do I Feel About Halloween?

I really don't not like Halloween, it just were it come from, what it was really about and how we took it. I like the candy if we buy it, if somebody gives it to me and I know the person I'll take it, but if I don't know the person I wont take it. I feel that Halloween isn't safe because what if somebody puts poison in the candy? You could DIE! I like some parts of Halloween because I can were make-up and some of those scary teeth and the vampire capes and the pumpkins and the black cats and the crafts and the candy.

How does my attitude affect my environment?

In order for me to answer this question and honestly, I'll do an intervew with my siblings.

This is what Marcia, my four-year-old sister said about me: "I like Tiffany 'cause she lets me play with her dolls."
Then I talked to my sister Emily, age 6. The question went like this:
"Emily, do you like me?"
"No."
"Well, I don't like you either."
"Okay, I do like you because you shared some of your ice cream with me."
Now it's Andrianna's turn (8 years):
"Do you like me?"
"Ya."
"What is is about me thath you like?"
"..." (dazed)
"Andrianna?"
"Huh?"
"What do you like about me?"
That you go outside and play with me, and you're a cool big sister!"
Then I asked my older sister, Ashley, age 16. Here's what she said:
"What is is that you like about me?"
"You're good at listening when I have problems, and you don't tell my secrets (often). And you can (occasionally) be funny."
"What is it about me that you don't like?"
"Sometimes you can be very obnoxious, and you sometimes bully others. I wonder if you have a split personality...?"
Then I asked my brother Jonathan, age 11:
"What do you like about me?"
"You're my sister, you play with me and share things with me."
"What don't you like about me?"
"You're mean."
Then it was James, age 2:
"What do like about me, James?"
"Can I play Boohbah?"
"What don't you like about me?"
"Boohbah."
By saying this, he meant that I'm like a Boohbah; soft and squishy, and he likes to cuddle with me.
Then I interviewed my dad:
"What do you like about me?"
"Nothing."
"What is it about me that you don't like?"
"You whine a lot."
Now it's (finally) mom's turn: "What is it about me that you like?"
"Well, you're my daughter, and I love all my children. But what I like most about you is that you have very high self-esteem, and you don't let what people say about you affect you to the point where you go and sulk."
"What don't you like about me?"
"It's when I ask you to clean up and you whine and pout, and then when you finally get it done, it takes an hour (exaggeration). And the other thing-it's not that I don't like it about you, it's just that I'm concerned- is that you're a little overweight. But I'm working with you and we're going to get your weight under control."

What I think about what everyone said:
I believe I need to change my actions.

Homeschooled

Let me start off by saying my first year of school started in public school. I was a preschooler. My teacher's name was Ms. Johnson and I loved her. I didn't like school then and I still don't. There were these two boys in my class named Kwamee and Avery and they were my friends. All I remember is that we played alot of games and cut out letters. I got out of public school when I was in kindergarten.

My first two years of homeschool were excellent; I was a hard worker. But when I got to the second grade, I slowed up. My mom had just had her 6th child and she seemed to lose all her organization skills. It was hard for her to re-adjust. In the third grade I fell behind because of a family crisis. But now that I'm in the seventh grade, I'm catching back up and my favorite subjects are history, art and spelling. I'm getting better at spelling now, because at first I was terrible. Math still stinks, but I'm willing to try and get better at it. I'm enjoying homeschooling thus far; I already know what I'll major when I grow up, but I really don't want to go back to public school. I enjoy homeschooling because of the free style of learning.

Open Journal.

My mom gave me and my sister, Ashley, a composition book and I was like, "What the dink is that?!" And she was like, "Its an open journal." And she said it all slow and scary like one of those funny T.V. shows. The first time she got it was in January ( this year ) and the first question was, 'What Church Means to Me', and my answer was 'Jesus and the Pastor'. The rest is nothing but 'What's in the News Today' and the second time I got it was in September. I'm not gonna put the first ones in; only this one: 'How do you learn to live with an older sibling that's perfect?' So I put, 'We all have older siblings and they're all perfect, but the best thing to do is out - perfect them, you're younger, smarter, and cuter so its easy to get on your parents' good side.' And mom puts little comments on them, and the one she put on that one was so..... mom. 'All older siblings are not perfect; actually no one is but JESUS. We all make mistakes, but we learn from them. I love the positive attitude you have, stay that way. You could have written a little more but its OKAY.' And when I read it I was like "WHAT?" And when I showed it to her I was like "WHAT?" And she smiled that mom smile. It was very scary.

Blackafrackasmackalack?

This blog is about school. And that is exactly what the title means, what does it means you may ask? It means Why does school have to be so hard? Why can't it be easy like history and food? Yes, that says it all. The first reason I don't get school is because 1) I hate math and spelling. 2) My mom is very... very... mom. 3) My big sister is so big sister. 4) My dad is the principal 5) the small space that is considered our work area. 6) my schedule
